By: Bryan Kalbrosky January 16, One that is getting more attention of late is DJ Diesel. Whether as an actor or businessman, it is never a surprise to hear his name pop up when discussing a new project. Plus, it is no shocker to see him succeed in music — his debut album went platinum in Now, he is earning the love of fans at festivals including Lollapalooza in Chicago and Tomorrowland in Belgium.
Those in attendance were folks of all ages, including quite a few wearing retro Los Angeles Lakers jerseys despite being a New England audience. One person who watched the event was Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown , who felt inspired by the performance and is now considering spinning his own sets as a hobby. What have been some of your memories of those shows and what keeps bringing you back? But even before that.
This town just likes to work hard, play hard and have fun. Whenever I get a chance to come back here, I want to let them know that I miss them and try to put on a good show.
How different is this DJ set going to be from when you conducted the Boston Pops Orchestra back in ? These kids, after a hard week, just want to release. People always ask me: why do you do this? This, right here, is my game tonight. Boston was playing New Orleans and put up points. My thing is: these kids spend their hard-earned money, right? Describe the similarities in terms of the atmosphere and how you play off that? You come out. The crowd is going wild. You give them a shot of a banger and you get them to go up and down.
And you just keep going. By Shaq's teenage years, Harrison had been restationed and moved the family to San Antonio. A now poised and confident player, Shaq led his high school team to a record during his junior and senior seasons. The school didn't possess a No. Hence, his famous No. When he played at LSU, he was able to nab 33, but in his rookie NBA season in Orlando, veteran Terry Catledge refused to give up his 33 jersey, so it was back to 32 for life for Shaq for the remainder of his time with the Magic.
The season was Shaq's coming out party. During his second collegiate season at LSU, the Diesel was a man among boys, becoming the first player to ever lead the SEC in scoring And he took his opponents by surprise. Those who expected a round mound of rebound i. But he's got no fat, none whatsoever. He's just seven feet of muscle, a muscle monster. And yes, he was upset about it. While the powers that be attempted to choose the best NBA talent possible to represent Team USA and take on the world at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona, they reserved one roster spot for a collegiate star.
Shaq was a junior at LSU at the time and fully eligible, but the spot instead went with Christian Laettner, a Duke standout who was thought of as more polished. At the time, the international free throw lane was designed differently, and the committee filling out the roster believed that would cause traditional post-up centers like Shaq to lose their effectiveness.
Of course, the young Shaq didn't take it well. But then I had to come to the realization that I was a more explosive, more powerful player, but Christian Laettner was a little bit more fundamentally sound than I was. Shaq was on that team. Shaq ended his SEC Player of the Year season with a remarkable 36 points and 12 rebounds while stunningly going for from the line—a feat he'd never accomplish once he went pro in an loss to Indiana.
But these early exits certainly didn't deter NBA scouts; he was still the first overall draft pick in , heading to the Orlando Magic. Shaq was immediately the toast of the NBA. Among his many accolades , he was named Rookie of the Year for the ''93 season and he nabbed a starting spot in the All-Star Game his first four seasons. But though young Shaq was the new face of the game and the life of the party, at 21, he couldn't stomach alcohol. Turns out, there was a good reason for that.
Not only did I get drunk, I hated beer, and I never had the urge to drink again. Despite his distaste for the stuff, Shaq eventually marketed his own line of vodka, the excellently named Luv Shaq. The most prominent portion of Shaq's career was spent in Hollywood, and his eight seasons with the Lakers brought three NBA Championships to the city. But while Shaq's L. Bizarrely, the two couldn't sync their play properly from the outset based on talent alone.
Long before their famous feud and struggle for credit and control of the locker room began, two of their first three campaigns together ended in embarrassing playoff sweeps. And they had a great bond with Shaquille. Particularly, the tradeoff between Chip Fu and Shaq just seemed to fit. Chip was an amazing rapper. And Shaq was a good rapper … much better than people expected him to be. Go get busy. Chip was his rap coach. They were big-time at that moment. Chip really validated Shaq.
The Fu-Schnickens taught me how to put songs together, and how to be a professional rapper. I really owe a lot to them — especially Chip Fu. He just needed a little polishing up. You serious. Once we were able to make a deal with Armato, we sprang into action. We knew we were going to get a shot at every media outlet.
I had no fear. I was going to sell a lot of albums because people wanted to see what I could do. When you go to an opposing arena, you got your fans, you got some doubters, and you got some haters. But they all still come to see you perform. A lot of people in the music industry thought Shaq rapping was a gimmick.
Large Professor [of Main Source ] also declined. He was one of those elusive artists … all that mysterious s— [laughs]. We ended up going to K-Cut because he had helped him with some of the production on those Main Source records.
You have to remix it. They flew me to Orlando. Shaq signs autographs — K-Cut is on a really huge phone. And Phife Dawg came onboard because Shaq loved Phife.
Everybody loved Phife. Phife added a lot of credibility to Shaq Diesel because he was the essence of hip-hop. If you had Phife Dawg on your album, people knew it was real. And Phife loved the fact that Shaq was a basketball player who loved to rap.
He knew more about basketball than me — especially New York-area basketball. At times, I think he felt underappreciated, so when he went in the booth, he always went hard. I remember seeing Shaq come into the studio with paper and pieces of napkin. This is how he wrote his rhymes.
So you know, in every city the Magic was playing, Shaq was sitting down, writing lyrics and piecing them together when it was finally time for him to record. Shaq was really showing dedication. Winter — Summer He pointed to a posse of twentysomething bass bros in the distance. The experience swept him off his sizefeet. He returned to TomorrowWorld the following year, this time as a performing DJ. Mada and Alison Wonderland to name a few. Italy was rocking all night!
