Instead of instilling awe or rapture, this stiffly paced and hard-edged reading is devoid of feeling and induces only boredom, since everything is so brutally hammered out. Deutsche Grammophon's boosted sound is upfront and in your face, so there is no chance you'll miss a note of this heavy-handed presentation. AllMusic relies heavily on JavaScript. For the price, this set is a fantastic musical value and a no-brainer purchase. I am very happy! It is amazing! A great conductor doing wonders with the music of the greatest of all composers in the world What a thrill it is to have such priceless beauty in my life. I love It! Patricia Najhawan. One person found this helpful. Probably the best Beethoven recordings of all time. Even later versions were not as good as this one. Plus the bonus that because it is an "Old" recording it is cheaper.
I had been searching for the best possible recordings of Beethoven's Nine singularly, based on the premise that a complete cycle of excellent performances in one set would not be possible.
The first time I had the opportunity to listen to this Von Karajan cycle I realized that I was mistaken, and that all the greatest performances of the Master's Nine that I could hope to find were contained in this set. One wonders what would make Von Karajan conduct three more complete cycles after this first one. The performances he and the Berlin Philharmonic gave here are superb.
Dubbed "The German Perfectionist", Von Karajan lives up to this appellation throughout these recordings. His readings of the Nine are as close to the way the Master himself would have conducted them as you are likely to find, and the Berlin Philharmonic, always capable of wonderful performances, are glorious under Von Karajan's direction.
My personal favorite of this set is the Ninth- Gundula Janowitz's Soprano in the Final Movement is nothing short of heavenly.
The tempo of the Sixth is likely to be a bit faster than you are used to hearing, as Von Karajan returns to the original tempo of the work rather than using the slower pace that has become traditional. The force of the Fifth is stunning, never slackening throughout the peformance, and this performance of Eroica, the Third, is the best that I have ever heard.
Beethoven was the world's greatest composer, Herbert Von Karajan was the world's greatest conductor, and these performances comprise Von Karajan's Greatest Beethoven Cycle. What more can be said?

Karajan introduced even more innovations: he founded the Salzburg Easter Festival in , at which the Philharmoniker were able to also make a name for themselves as an opera orchestra; the Salzburg Whitsun Festival followed in The Herbert von Karajan Conducting Competition, first held in , was springboard to an international career for young conductors like Mariss Jansons and Valery Gergiev.
Concerned about the next generation of musicians, he initiated the Orchestra Academy in it prepares prospective orchestra musicians to work in a professional orchestra. The conflict that seemed perhaps the most spectacular in the public sphere was the case of the clarinettist Sabine Meyer, whom Karajan — against the objections of the orchestra — wanted to engage for the Berlin Philharmonic.
In April , after renewed contention, Karajan resigned his office as principal conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker. He died three months later in Anif.
